It's a cheap political trick: Hold a news conference and put out a press release taking credit for things you didn't, and won't, do. Take the photo op and run. This is what Bill de Blasio did. . . .
de Blasio's Response: October 31, 2009 --When asked if he would send us this resolution: "Were working on it." "Ask de Blasio Why" Organizer Elizabeth Ely's response: "But not actually sending it?" Answer: Silence.
De Blasio announced on Jan. 28, 2009, the very day the Vera Institute's investigative report on foster children in HIV/AIDS clinical trials came out:
"The findings of this report were limited by not having access to the clinical trial research files and medical records kept by the New York State Department of Health. I have submitted a resolution calling on the state to release these materials so we can have a full airing of the facts. I will also be holding a hearing of the General Welfare Committee to examine setting new standards in the enrollment process ACS [the Administration for Children's Services] uses for drafting children into clinical trials."
We see no evidence of a resolution, hearing, or "new standards." In fact, both resolutions calling for ACS accountability died in his committee because he didn't hold hearings on them.
